What does waterproofing cost in NSW in 2026? Residential shower, balcony, basement, and injection waterproofing prices, with the factors that affect your final quote.
Waterproofing quotes in NSW vary enormously, from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands, depending on scope, access, substrate condition, and the method required. Understanding why prices vary helps you evaluate quotes accurately and avoid the common trap of accepting the cheapest quote without understanding what it does and does not include.
The primary cost drivers in any waterproofing job are: the area to be waterproofed (measured in square metres), the method required (injection, liquid membrane, sheet membrane, or tanking system), whether tile removal is required, the substrate condition and how much preparation is needed, site access constraints (multi-storey, scaffolding, strata building procedures), the Australian Standard the work must comply with, and the products specified. A quote that omits flood testing, certificates, or uses generic products will look cheaper but will not deliver the same outcome or legal protection.
Shower and bathroom waterproofing is the most common residential waterproofing job in NSW. Pricing for 2026 reflects labour rates, material costs, and the complexity of the specific job.
Shower repair without tile removal (injection and re-sealing): for a standard residential shower enclosure where the membrane failure is accessible via injection and grout re-pointing, typical pricing ranges from $800 to $1,800 plus GST. This includes polyurethane injection, epoxy grout re-pointing of all joints, full replacement of all silicone sealant at the screen and threshold, and a compliance report. The low end applies to small shower enclosures with minimal tile area and good access. The high end applies to large wet areas with extensive grout failure or difficult access.
Full shower waterproofing membrane replacement with tile removal: for a standard bathroom shower enclosure requiring tile removal, membrane replacement, and tile reinstatement, typical pricing ranges from $3,500 to $7,500 plus GST. This range reflects floor area, the size of the tile selected (smaller mosaic tiles cost more to reinstate than large-format tiles), whether the original tiles can be reused or must be replaced, and the membrane system specified. The compliance certificate, flood test, and workmanship warranty are included.
All Econyc bathroom and shower waterproofing includes a 5-year workmanship warranty.
Balcony waterproofing is more expensive than shower waterproofing on a per-square-metre basis because of the materials required for external exposure performance, the higher product cost of UV-resistant deck-grade membranes, the typically larger area involved, and the more complex junction and threshold treatment required under AS 4654.2.
Balcony perimeter and joint repair only (no tile removal): for a standard residential balcony where the failure is limited to perimeter sealant joints, threshold joints, and drain surrounds, typical pricing ranges from $1,200 to $3,500 plus GST depending on the balcony perimeter length and the number of discrete failure points. This work involves full removal and replacement of all perimeter and movement joint sealant, re-grouting of tile joints at the perimeter, and any drainage modifications required. Flood test and AS 4654.2 certificate included.
Full balcony membrane replacement with tile removal: for a standard residential balcony requiring full tile removal, membrane replacement, and tile reinstatement, typical pricing ranges from $5,500 to $18,000 plus GST. Balconies in the 10 to 20 sqm range fall in the lower half of this range. Larger balconies (20 to 40 sqm), tiered balconies, or balconies requiring scaffolding fall in the higher range. The 10-year workmanship warranty, flood test, and AS 4654.2 compliance certificate are included.
Basement waterproofing pricing in NSW depends significantly on whether internal (negative-side) or external (positive-side) tanking is required and whether injection is part of the scope.
Crack injection only: for basement walls or floors with discrete identifiable cracks being injected as the primary scope, pricing typically ranges from $1,500 to $6,000 plus GST depending on the number and length of cracks, the accessibility of the injection points, and the product required (polyurethane foam for active leaks, epoxy for structural cracks). Note: injection does not include a workmanship warranty and is not the recommended approach for habitable spaces.
Internal negative-side tanking: for a standard basement room being tanked internally with a cementitious or crystalline system, pricing typically ranges from $4,500 to $14,000 plus GST depending on the floor area, wall height, substrate condition, and the extent of crack pre-treatment required. The 7-year workmanship warranty and compliance documentation are included.
External positive-side tanking: where excavation is required to access the external face of a basement wall, the cost of excavation is additional to the waterproofing membrane cost and is determined by site access, wall depth, and soil conditions. In metropolitan Sydney, full external tanking of a two-car basement wall (approximately 40 lineal metres) ranges from $25,000 to $60,000 plus GST including excavation, membrane, drainage board, and backfill.
Every Econyc waterproofing quote includes the following as standard: site inspection by a licensed technician, written fixed-price scope of works, identification of the membrane product to be applied and its application rate, flood test on completion, AS 3740 or AS 4654.2 compliance certificate on completion, and the applicable workmanship warranty. These items are not additional charges. They are part of what we do on every job.
Items that are priced separately where applicable: tile supply (we can assist with sourcing matching tiles or tile procurement), structural repairs required to the substrate before waterproofing can commence, scaffolding or elevated access equipment for multi-storey balconies, and strata by-law compliance submissions or reports for owners corporations.
We do not provide verbal or ballpark quotes. Every quote is written, itemised, and submitted before any work commences. The price in the quote is the price you pay unless the scope changes, in which case we discuss and agree any variation with you before proceeding.
Econyc’s pricing reflects the use of top-tier products from Normet, Sika, and Tremco. These are not the cheapest products on the market. They are specified by engineers and architects on major Australian projects because their performance is well-documented, their warranties are meaningful, and their failure rates are low.
Using premium products matters for warranty validity. All Sika and Tremco manufacturer warranties are conditional on the product being applied by a trained contractor in accordance with the technical data sheet. Econyc’s contractors maintain current product training and applicator status with our primary product suppliers.
If you receive a quote that is substantially cheaper than the Econyc price, ask specifically what product is being used and at what application rate. Generic waterproofing products applied at below-specification rates are the most common cause of waterproofing failures in NSW. The cost of a failure and remediation always exceeds the savings on the original job.
Why does my quote vary so much between contractors?
The most common reasons for large price variation in waterproofing quotes are differences in what is included (some quotes exclude the flood test, certificate, or warranty), differences in product quality and application rates, differences in whether the contractor is licensed (unlicensed contractors typically quote lower), and differences in scope accuracy. Always compare quotes on a like-for-like basis and confirm what is and is not included.
Can I get a government rebate or insurance contribution for waterproofing work?
In NSW, there are no general government rebates for residential waterproofing. Some insurance policies cover sudden and accidental water damage, which may include waterproofing repair costs. Gradual leaks are typically excluded. We recommend consulting your insurer and ensuring any claim is supported by a licensed contractor’s report.
How do I know if I am getting a fair price?
A fair waterproofing price reflects licensed labour, premium products applied at specified rates, a flood test, a compliance certificate, and a workmanship warranty. If a quote is significantly below market rate, one or more of these elements is likely absent. Econyc provides transparent written quotes and is happy to explain every line item.
Does the price include GST?
All Econyc pricing is quoted exclusive of GST unless specifically stated otherwise. GST of 10 percent applies to all waterproofing work in Australia as it is not a GST-exempt supply.
