Retaining Wall Waterproofing Sydney

CETCO Voltex & Tremco Paraseal approved applicator — bentonite systems for below-grade structures.

You Only Get One Chance to Get It Right

Retaining wall waterproofing is buried under tonnes of retained soil the moment backfilling begins. Any failure means excavating back to the wall face to repair — at costs that routinely exceed the original construction budget for the wall itself.

Econyc is an approved applicator for both CETCO Voltex and Tremco Paraseal — the two benchmark bentonite panel systems used on major Sydney construction projects. Our approval means a manufacturer-backed product warranty stacked on top of our own 10-year workmanship warranty.

Choose the Right Bentonite System

CETCO Voltex

5 kg/m² sodium bentonite between two geotextiles. Standard choice for positive-side retaining walls, below-slab, and blind-side waterproofing in dry conditions.

Tremco Paraseal

Voltex plus factory-applied HDPE film — preferred where residual moisture is present at installation, or where a defined maximum water transmission rate is specified.

Complete System

Econyc designs the full drainage + waterproofing system — drainage cells, subsoil drains, sump and pump where required. Not just the membrane layer.

How Bentonite Waterproofing Works

Sodium bentonite clay absorbs up to 15× its own weight in water, expanding to form a dense, virtually impermeable gel. When confined between the structure and retained soil, the swelling clay fills voids and self-seals — including around small penetrations and minor installation overlaps. This self-sealing characteristic is bentonite’s most significant advantage: minor installation damage does not create permanent leak pathways.

CETCO Voltex — Specification & Applications

Contains approximately 5 kg/m² of sodium bentonite needle-punched between two geotextile layers. Applications include: vertical retaining walls and basement walls (positive side before backfill), horizontal below-slab, tunnel waterproofing, and blind-side wall waterproofing against shoring. Minimum 150 mm overlap at all seams, taped with CETCO mastic. Penetrations detailed with bentonite mastic collars. Must be protected from premature hydration before backfill.

Tremco Paraseal — Specification & Applications

Voltex plus a factory-applied HDPE film on one face — additional protection against premature hydration and extra puncture resistance on rough surfaces. Creates a composite system (bentonite + geomembrane). Preferred where residual moisture is present at installation, or where the specification requires a defined maximum water transmission rate.

Drainage Behind Retaining Walls

Waterproofing alone is not sufficient. Hydrostatic pressure can structurally overload a wall and overwhelm any membrane. Bentonite waterproofing must always be paired with a drainage system: drainage cell or board (Enkadrain, Platon) over the panel; granular drainage layer connected to a slotted agricultural drain at the base; and for high groundwater, a perimeter drain discharging to a sump with automatic submersible pump. Econyc designs and installs the complete drainage and waterproofing system.

Indicative Sydney Costs — 2025

  • CETCO Voltex or Tremco Paraseal supply & install: $90–$160/m²
  • Drainage cell or board: $30–$60/m²
  • Perimeter subsoil drain: $80–$150/linear metre
  • Bentonite mastic at penetrations: $150–$400 per penetration

New build projects with direct access before backfill are significantly less expensive than remedial projects requiring excavation to re-expose the wall face.

Approved Applicator Status

Factory-trained installation on CETCO Voltex and Tremco Paraseal means we understand the installation requirements that activate the product warranty. Engaging Econyc gives you both manufacturer product warranty (typically 10 years) and our 10-year workmanship warranty, plus full installation documentation.
